Consecration

The formal setting aside of land and/or buildings for sacred use is known as "consecration". The Bishop has the right to consecrate new church buildings burial grounds. This is normally done before any burials take place. The Bishop may also consecrate ground solely for the interment of cremated remains. Once consecrated, a building or ground then becomes subject to the church’s faculty jurisdiction.

On occasions the bishop may also be asked to consecrate cemeteries which are owned by a Parish Council or by a local authority. Any burial authorities who wish the bishop to consecrate land in such circumstances are invited to contact the Diocesan Registrar in the first instance.
